Welcome to the second edition of the Silver Beach Newsletter for 2010.

We are beginning to see signs of life down here, which can only mean Summer is just around the corner!!  Boy, has it been hot!! This is somewhat unusual for June.  I only hope that wind turns around and brings us those cool ocean breezes soon!

OCEAN BEACH IS NOW OPEN

Our lifeguards came on duty Saturday, June 19th and will be on duty daily, 9am-6pm, through Labor Day.  Come on up and say “hi” to Cap and his crew.

You also may pick up your badges at the Badge House between 10am and 3pm as of that date.

We would also like to remind you that the Bay Beach is closed to swimming due to stinging sea nettles.  However, the playground and tennis court are still open.

LIFEGUARD STAND NUMBERING

Over the winter, the beaches from Ocean Beach I to Normandy met to discuss beach safety.  One of the suggestions that was acted upon was to number the lifeguard stands from Ocean Beach I to Normandy Beach from 1 to 26,   respectively.  The motivation behind this change was to enable people, particularly renters, who are up on the beach to contact emergency services and inform them of their location on the beach.  There are several redundant or similar street names in the area and there have been several incidents when emergency vehicles could not locate the people needing help.   Silver Beach’s stands will be numbered 21 on the south end and 22 on the north end.  We recommend that you inform your children of this numbering scheme in the event they get disoriented and wander away.  Most children can recognize numbers and should be able to figure out which way to go to get back to their families.  And remember to remind your children that lifeguards are like policemen on the beach; they should be encouraged to go to them if they get lost or hurt.

ADDITIONAL CHILD SAFETY SUGGESTIONS

Although this may be repetitious, we feel it warrants repeating…

With the opening of the beach, it is again time to remind everyone how easy it is for a child to get disoriented on the beach and wander away from his family.  From a child's perspective, the beach can be very daunting.  They are not tall enough to discern much and everything looks alike.  This is one of the most frightening things that can happen to both the child and his/her family.

We would like to suggest the following to anyone who brings small children to the beach, whether they are your own children, guests or renters:

Explain to your children, if they get lost, to go to any lifeguard stand or the Badge House.  The lifeguards are able to communicate between the beaches and will be able to get your child back to you quickly.

If the child is old enough, teach them that they are in Silver Beach and our lifeguard stands are numbers 21 and 22.

Place last year's badges on children.  If they get lost, and don't know what beach they are staying at, the lifeguards or any adult will be able to determine where the child should be returned to.  If you no longer have old badges, you may pick some up at the Badge House.

If you see a child wandering aimlessly, please don't hesitate to ask if he or she is looking for their family.  Or point the child out to one of our lifeguards and they will approach the child.

Last, but not least, please stay with your children at the water's edge.  Our lifeguards are great, but they are not babysitters!!  The ocean can be very strong, especially for children, and there is no substitution for an alert parent.

DEFIBRILLATOR

We would like to remind you that we now have a defibrillator that may be used on both adults and children.  If you have a medical emergency during July and August when the beach is open (9am – 6pm), FIRST CALL 911!!  However, please do not hesitate to also contact the Badge House at 732-793-8357 after you call 911.  Our lifeguards have been trained and would gladly come to your house to offer any assistance they can.  PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, however, this is NOT in lieu of calling 911.  Contacting the First Aid Squad immediately is imperative!!    With summer crowds and traffic, when every minute counts, the First Aid Squad and/or Toms River Police may be on another call or delayed in traffic and our guards are only steps away.

BEACH WHEELCHAIR

We would like to remind our Members that, thanks to the generosity of our Members, we now have a beach wheelchair available to transport people with mobility problems to and from the beach.  To make arrangements to use the wheelchair, call the Badge House at 732-793-8357 between 9am and 6pm when the guards are on duty.  In order to accommodate multiple people, we ask that anyone using the wheelchair bring another chair to sit on at the beach.

JULY 4TH FIREWORKS

The Executive Committee would like to remind everyone that fireworks are illegal and NOT permitted on the beach.  Fireworks are dangerous, even when set off by trained professionals; imagine how dangerous they are in the hands of an untrained person, particularly a child.  Each year, after the 4th of July, we read of people who lose fingers, eyes or more because of fireworks.  The beach is no place to do this!!  It is entirely too narrow and has too many people on it.  It is also too close to people’s homes, which poses a severe fire hazard, particularly with an on-shore wind.

We ask that everyone refrain from shooting off fireworks and instead attend one of the many local displays that are handled professionally.  Here is a list of the nearest displays:

Friday, July 2nd and Saturday, July 3rd

Lakewood Blue Claws Stadium, after the game

And don’t forget a sweatshirt…it gets cool up at the beach at night!!

DON’T FORGET THE NEW 511 SYSTEM

With the start of the Summer season, traffic in the area is building by the day.  We mentioned this last year, but think it is worthy of repeating.  New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania have instituted a “511” phone system for traffic information.   You can dial either 511 (or 1-866-511-NJDT (6538) in NJ) from your home or cell phone or go to their website for up to the minute traffic information.  There is also an alert system, which will send alerts to your cell phone or PDA.  For further information, check the website:

www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/511/overview.shtm

We’ve been traveling up north quite a bit this spring and it has really come in handy!!

TOMS RIVER TIDBITS

Well, Toms River did it again!  They changed the garbage collection schedule and the recycling rules and didn’t inform us.  Makes one wonder what they’re doing with our tax dollars!!  A 40% increase in taxes and a 25% decrease in service…doesn’t sound right!!

·         According to the Toms River website, twice a week garbage collection will begin the week of July 5th and run through September 2nd.  I guess we should consider ourselves lucky, as only the barrier island will get twice a week collection this summer; the mainland will have to live with once a week collection throughout the summer.

·         Also, according to the Toms River website, there was a change in how recyclables should be left at the curb.  Here is the text from the Toms River website:

This Spring, the Township will begin a “single-stream” recycling program in conjunction with changes made in Ocean County.  You will now place rinsed cans, plastics and glass bottles (for safety, please remove and discard plastic caps) AND PAPER PRODUCTS INCLUDING all newspapers, mixed paper, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, brown bags, books (without the hardcover), and corrugated cardboard together IN THE SAME STURDY, REUSABLE 30-gallon or smaller container (metal or plastic) identified with Township recycling seal (seal is available at the Toms River Township Public Works Department).  Please keep items dry.  Nothing can be tied, bagged or bundled in any way.  It is recommended that drain holes be drilled in the bottom of the container to prevent water buildup in the recycling can.

Plastic film bags should be returned to local supermarkets for recycling. DO NOT place in container with curbside recyclables. Cereal box cardboard and hard book covers are not recyclable and are disposed of with regular garbage.

Packing materials and Styrofoam may be recycled at local commercial shipping facilities. (Comment - whatever or wherever they are???)

Unfortunately, we didn’t learn of this until recently so our 2010 Rules and Regulations are incorrect.  Please pass this information on to your guests and renters.

RAINY DAY ACTIVITIES

We hope you won’t need this, but it’s a good idea to be prepared…some of these are repeats…but it’s been a while since we wrote about them…

NJ Shipwreck Museum and Museum of NJ Maritime History

Did you know that NJ has a Shipwreck Museum and a Museum of NJ Maritime History?  Neither did I.  There is also a Maritime Museum right in downtown Toms River.

The Shipwreck Museum was recently started by the NJ Historical Divers Association.  It is in its formative stages, and has limited exhibits and hours.  It is located of Rt. 18 in Wall Township in Info Age Science Center in the old Marconi Hotel, which was built in 1914.  Some of the pictures on the site from the “early days” are quite interesting.  You’ll love the showers!! Might be worth the trip just for the walk down memory lane.  There also are communication exhibits at the center, including Radio Technology, Vintage Computers and the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

The Museum of NJ Maritime History is appears to be more established.  It is located in Beach Haven.

The Maritime Museum in Toms River is located on Water Street and Hooper Avenue.  It has various models on display as well as a library and ships store.

Popcorn Zoo in Lacey - Have you ever ventured to Popcorn Zoo in Lacey?  It’s easy to find, right off the parkway at exit 74. It’s open daily from 11am-5pm.  The zoo is operated by the American Human Societies, so the majority of the animals have been rescued.  It’s not the Bronx Zoo, but it would be something to do on a cloudy day.  Bring a picnic lunch and plan to spend a few hours with nature, learning about wildlife and conservation.  See their website for further information:

New Eqypt Speedway’s Kids Club - Have you heard about the "Ralphie the Racer's Kids Club" at the New Egypt Speedway on Rt. 539 in New Egypt? The club is open to all children of the ages 4 to 10. The club meets twice each Saturday in the Turn 4 Picnic Area.

The first time the Kid’s Club gathers at 4pm to take a ride in the Fan Van. The Fan Van is a little school bus, which gets driven by a different race car driver each week throughout the pit area. This opportunity gives the kids a great chance to see all the cars up close and meet a lot of the racecar drivers. Many of the drivers even give the kids a little treat or toy.

The second meeting time is at 7pm when club members get to enjoy many different activities, such as arts and crafts, games and much more. All activities are supervised by professionals who are CPR and First Aid Certified and years of experience in child care with certificates.

Membership for one year is $10. When you join, you'll receive a "Ralphie The Racer" T-shirt, Ralphie autograph card, be a part of weekly kids club activities, and participate in pit tours in the Fan Van.  This sounds like any little boy’s dream!

For further information on the Kid’s Club and the race schedule, check out their website:

Wall Stadium – formerly Wall Speedway, is again open for racing on Saturday nights and for gocarts on Sundays.  Check their website for the lineup:
