WE NEED YOUR SUGGESTIONS

We are in the process of developing our budget for 2009 and need your input of things we could budget for that would be of benefit to our members.  Our meeting is scheduled for early August, so if you have an idea, please either speak to one of our Officers or Trustees, or e-mail us at:

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

As much as we don’t like to think about it, the hurricane season began June 1st and will run until November 1st, not that Mother Nature has a calendar.  We have been fortunate for many years, but it’s best to be prepared anyway.  Here are some suggestions to prepare for the worst:

  • Keep a kit of emergency supplies which will enable you to stay self-sufficient for 3 days.  This includes medication, food, batteries and, most importantly, water.
  • Make a plan for what you and your family will do during an emergency, including how you will get in touch with one another.  Don’t expect your cell phones to work!
  • Keep several flashlights or battery-operated lanterns, with extra batteries, on hand in case the power goes out.  Candles work in a pinch, but can be dangerous and start a fire.
  • Keep a battery-operated radio, with extra batteries, to stay informed of threats.
  • Store any furniture, toys, flower pots, trash cans and the like inside, if possible.  If it’s not possible to stow inside, tie it down and place out of the way of the wind.  The wind gets real nasty during a storm!
    •  It is particularly important to remove umbrellas from outdoor tables. This is a practice we recommend, even if you are just going away for a few days. The wind can kick up when you least expect it.
    • If your table has a glass top, it is best to turn it upside down.  The wind can grab a pane of glass and it will become a flying object.
  • Visit www.ready.nj.gov/plan/hurricane-before.html or call 211 to get more information on the hurricane season and how to prepare for it.
  • There are also resources for people with disabilities and special needs.

o        Register with the Ocean County Office of Emergency Management (call 732-341-3451 or email OceanCountyEmergencyManagement@co.ocean.nj.us) and the Toms River Police Department (call 732-349-0150). Make sure they keep a record of the special assistance you may need during an evacuation, power outage or other emergency.

    • If you are electricity-dependent, register with Jersey Central Power and Light. Make sure they, along with the Office of Emergency Management and the Police, keep a record of the special assistance you will need during a power outage.
  • If you have an elderly neighbor, please ask if they need help.
  • Keep your gas tank filled in case you are told to evacuate.
    • If you are told to evacuate, DO IT NOW!! Don’t be a hero!  This is not the time to try to save material things which can be replaced.  Traffic off the barrier island will be much heavier than a holiday weekend, especially if Rt. 35 starts to flood.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

ISLAND SENIOR BUS SCHEDULE

The Island Senior Bus is a service offered by Toms River Township, in conjunction with the Boroughs of Seaside Heights, Lavallette, and Seaside Park, the County of Ocean and NJ Transit. It is strictly for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons living on the Barrier Island in the participating municipalities.  The Bus has a lift, and hold downs for Accessibility.

The Bus runs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, leaving the Seaside Heights Public Works Building at 9:00 AM. The normal pick-up route ends in north Lavallette.  However, the Bus will pick up in Silver Beach if a call is placed in advance. The Bus then travels down Route 35 South to the Fischer Boulevard Shop-Rite, Ocean County Mall, and Foodtown.  Pick up from the mainland begins at 12:15 at the Shop-Rite, and continues in the same order as above.

To make arrangements for a pick-up, call 732-793-0313, between 7am-8:30am the day you wish to take the bus.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT “SHOOBOO”?

The Shooboo Shuttle is a 24-passenger, air-conditioned bus that runs between the free parking lot at Bay Boulevard and Sumner Avenue and several locations on the boardwalk.  It runs daily between May 15th and September 1st from 10am to 3am.  The daily cost is $2 per person until 10pm and $5 per person after 10pm.  Sure beats trying to find parking at the boardwalk.  For further information, check their website:

TRANSPORTATION TO FESTIVAL OF THE ATLANTIC CONCERTS

Thanks to the feedback from one of our Members, we just learned that Diane Turton Realtors will provide free bus service to the Festival of the Atlantic Concerts. Buses depart from and return to the Lavallette Fire Department. Tickets for 60 seats on two buses are available on a first-come-first-serve basis with a maximum of four tickets per person. Free passes can be picked up at the firm’s Lavallette sales office from Thursday morning until Wednesday, the day of the concert.  Sure beats trying to find parking up at the inlet.

FAMIY MOVIES ON THE BEACH

We have collected about half the funds needed to acquire the equipment for family movies on the beach.  We will keep you posted as other contributions come in.  In the meantime, both Pt. Pleasant and Seaside Heights offer movies on the beach….check their websites for further information:

RAINY DAY ACTIVITY – INSECTROPOLIS

Now I’ve heard everything!! Did you know there is a new insect museum in Toms River, with hundreds of live insects and arthropods, thousands of pinned specimens from around the world and even ones visitors can touch?!?  It’s called Insectropolis and is located on Rt. 9 in Toms River.  While I’m not a fan of anything with more than 4 legs, I’m sure this would be both fun and educational for children.  It’s open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-3pm.  So give it a try and let me know what you think.  Here is a link to their website:

POPCORN ZOO IN LACEY

Have you ever ventured to Popcorn Zoo in Lacey?  It’s easy to find, right off the parkway at exit 74. It’s open daily from 11am-5pm.  The zoo is operated by the American Human Societies, so the majority of the animals have been rescued.  It’s not the Bronx Zoo, but it would be something to do on a cloudy day.  Bring a picnic lunch and plan to spend a few hours with nature, learning about wildlife and conservation.  See their website for further information:

NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY’S KID’S CLUB

Have you heard about the "Ralphie the Racer's Kids Club" at the New Egypt Speedway on Rt. 539 in New Egypt? The club is open to all children of the ages 4 to 10. The club meets twice each Saturday in the Turn 4 Picnic Area.

The first time the Kid’s Club gathers at 4pm to take a ride in the Fan Van. The Fan Van is a little school bus, which gets driven by a different race car driver each week throughout the pit area. This opportunity gives the kids a great chance to see all the cars up close and meet a lot of the racecar drivers. Many of the drivers even give the kids a little treat or toy.

The second meeting time is at 7pm when club members get to enjoy many different activities, such as arts and crafts, games and much more. All activities are supervised by professionals who are CPR and First Aid Certified and years of experience in child care with certificates.

Membership for one year is $10. When you join, you'll receive a "Ralphie The Racer" T-shirt, Ralphie autograph card, be a part of weekly kids club activities, and participate in pit tours in the Fan Van.  This sounds like any little boy’s dream!

For further information on the Kid’s Club and the race schedule, check out their website:
