BEACH CLEAN-UP and NOR’EASTER
The Executive Committee would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to help clean up the beach on May 3rd!! We had a wonderful group and the beach was pristine in no time.
Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other ideas. The Nor’easter that churned up the ocean on Monday, May 12th really did a number on our beach. A tremendous amount of trash, including drift wood and stairs washed up, the blowing sand covered our newly planted dune grass and our streets, and the beach was severely eroded. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the dune grass that was planted in March will survive. While we are confident that the tide will bring back much of the sand, we had to bring in a dumpster and hire a crew to clear the debris in preparation for the grading that was scheduled for Tuesday, May 20th. We also incurred an additional day of bulldozing, which had not been planned, since the beach was in such good shape prior to the storm. This resulted in an increase of $4,000 to our Beach Preservation budget for the labor, dumpster and the bulldozer. Many thanks to Rich Milligan for his diligence as our Beach Trustee to get this all coordinated under such a tight schedule!!
BEACH OPENING
The Ocean and Bay Beaches will open on Saturday, June 21st. Lifeguards are on duty:
Ocean Beach: 9am – 6pm
Bay Beach: 10am – 4pm
Come on up and say “hi” to Cap and his crew!!
CHILD SAFETY SUGGESTION
With the opening of the beach, it is again time to remind everyone how easy it is for a child to get disoriented on the beach and wander away from his family. From a child's perspective, the beach can be very daunting. They are not tall enough to discern much and everything looks alike. This is one of the most frightening things that can happen to both the child and his/her family.
We would like to suggest the following to anyone who brings small children to the
beach, whether they are your own children, guests or renters:
-Explain to your children, if they get lost, to go to any lifeguard stand or the
Badge House. Tell them the lifeguards are like policemen on the beach. The
lifeguards are able to communicate between the beaches and will be able to
get your child back to the appropriate beach quickly.
-If the child is old enough, teach them that they are in Silver Beach.
-Place last year's badges on children. If they get lost, and don't know what
beach they are staying at, the lifeguards or any adult will be able to determine
where the child should be returned to. If you no longer have old badges, you
may pick some up at the Badge House.
-If you see a child wandering aimlessly, please don't hesitate to ask if he or she
is looking for their family. Or point the child out to one of our lifeguards and
they will approach the child.
-Last, but not least, please stay with your children at the water's edge. Our
lifeguards are great, but they are not babysitters!! The ocean can be very
strong, especially for children, and there is no substitution for an alert parent!!
A SPECIAL PLEA FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
In past years, a handful of people have taken it upon themselves to launch illegal fireworks on our beach over July 4th weekend. The Executive Committee would like to remind everyone that fireworks are dangerous and illegal and would like to stress that we do not condone this activity. Members who do not comply may have their Membership suspended or terminated. The Toms River Police Department has also informed all the beaches that they will have a “no tolerance” policy in effect and will arrest and prosecute anyone caught with illegal fireworks.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT UPDATE
The recommended safety repairs to the swings and modular unit have been completed. This brings our playground equipment in compliance with all current safety requirements.
LIFEGUARD PARKING
In the past, our lifeguards were permitted to park in the Sandpiper parking lot. Now that the parking lot is gone, we are in desperate need of parking for our guards. We have made arrangements with the First Aid Squad to allow our guards to park there, if needed. However, if you generally have room for a car on your property on a regular basis, please see Ken, John or Gabby. Even if it’s only during the week or on a specific day of the week, the guards would greatly appreciate it, especially at the end of long, hot day in the sun.
FAMILY DAY
Volunteers are still desperately needed for Family Day on Friday, July 4th. Please contact Pete Detmering at 609-654-4385 if you are able to help out.
FAMILY DAY MASS
We are still looking for a Priest for our Family Day Mass on Sunday, July 6th. If anyone knows of a Priest who is available and would be willing to perform the service, please contact Carol Lundquist at 973-458-0906.

TOMS RIVER TIDBITS
TRASH AND RECYCLING:
Anyone who was here after Memorial Day probably noticed that trash was not picked up until Tuesday. This was not a mistake. If you are like me, you may not have paid much attention to the notice in your tax bill, which outlined the changes to the holiday schedule for trash and recycling pick-up that was recently instituted.
In the past, Toms River collected trash and recyclables on the regularly scheduled day, including all holidays, except Christmas and New Year’s Day. Beginning in 2008, trash and recyclables are no longer collected on holidays, except July 4th and Labor Day. If a holiday falls on a collection day, trash and recyclables will be collected the next day. Holidays include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, President’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.
We would also like to remind everyone that Ocean County has recently changed the manner in which paper and cardboard is to be recycled. Paper and cardboard should no longer be tied up. Paper and cardboard can now to be co-mingled in a separate container with a detachable lid. The container must be no larger than 30 gallons and must not exceed 40 pounds when full. We ask members who rent their home to pass this information on to their renters and provide them with a proper container.
We would also like to remind everyone that trash is NOT to be placed on the street in plastic bags!!! This just provides an open invitation to the seagulls, which are not the neatest of eaters!!! Your neighbor would much rather take in your empty trash can than clean up after the seagulls have strewn garbage unmentionable items all over the street!!!
