VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BEACH CLEANUP!!
Date: Saturday, May 3RD
Time: 9am
Place: Badge House, East Colony Road
Come join your friends and neighbors in this worthwhile effort. We have been cooped up all winter…it’s time to get outside and enjoy the beach while making a contribution to the community. Trash bags will be provided. Please remember to wear sturdy shoes and bring work gloves. We had a great turn-out for the dune grass planting and hope to see all of you at the beach cleanup. Many hands make the job go quickly!!
Hope to see you all there!!
A SPECIAL PLEA FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
In past years, a handful of people have taken it upon themselves to launch illegal fireworks on our beach over July 4th weekend. The Executive Committee would like to remind everyone that fireworks are dangerous and illegal and would like to stress that we do not condone this activity. The Toms River Police Department has informed all the beaches that they will have a “no tolerance” mandate in effect and will arrest and prosecute anyone caught with illegal fireworks.
A FRIENDLY REMINDER
The due date for 2008 Annual Dues is Saturday, May 31st. A Late Fee of $50 will be imposed after that date.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT UPDATE
You may have noticed that the big yellow slide and the frog spring ride at the Bay Beach have been removed. We recently arranged to have our playground equipment inspected; the inspector recommended that slide and frog be removed because they were unsafe and beyond repair. We are now making arrangements to have other maintenance/repairs done to the swings, modular units and picnic table to keep them in safe, working order and to prolong their usable life.
DEFIBRILLATOR
You may recall, last year we replaced our old defibrillator with one that may be used on both adults and children. If you have a medical emergency during July and August when the beach is open (9am – 6pm), FIRST CALL 911!! However, please do not hesitate to also contact the Badge House at 732-793-8357 after you call 911. Our lifeguards have been trained and would gladly come to your house to offer any assistance they can. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, however, this is NOT in lieu of calling 911. Contacting the First Aid Squad immediately is imperative!! With summer crowds and traffic, when every minute counts, the First Aid Squad and/or Toms River Police may be on another call or delayed in traffic and our guards are only steps away.
BEACH WHEELCHAIR
Thanks to the generosity of our Members, we are nearing our target to acquire a beach wheelchair. Keep those contributions coming. More information will be made available at our June 14th Membership Meeting and in future Newsletters.
FAMILY DAY
Date: Friday, July 4th
Time: Noon – 4pm
DJ and activities to be announced
Volunteers are desperately needed. Please contact Pete Detmering at 609-654-4385 if you care to get involved.
FAMILY DAY MASS
Date: Sunday, July 6th
Time: 10am
Place: Badge House
Please note: This is a tentative date. Due to illness, we have been unable to get a commitment for a Priest for that date. If anyone knows of a Priest who is available and would be willing to perform the service, please contact Carol Lundquist at 973-458-0906.
FAMIY MOVIE NIGHTS
We are very excited to announce that, thanks to the generosity of our Members, we are also nearing our target to acquire the projector and screen needed to provide family movies nights on the beach. Keep those contributions coming. We are shooting to run our premier movie in early July. More information will be made available at our June 14th Membership Meeting and in future Newsletters.
REAL ESTATE SALES
Over the past winter, we had several requests from Members to either:
o inform our Membership of houses about to go on the market
- or –
o inquire about homes that may be going on the market.
We discussed this at our last Executive Committee Meeting and decided that we would be willing to provide minimal contact information of both potential buyers and sellers of properties in Silver Beach to anyone on our Email Distribution List. If you would like your contact information added to this list, just email us at silverbeachnj@aol.com.
TOMS RIVER TIDBITS
o Toms River has agreed to place a dumpster at the Ocean Beach Firehouse (Kittiwake Avenue east of Rt. 35 North) on Memorial Day weekend so homeowners can get rid of their household garbage before they leave. This will prevent the seagulls from littering our streets. If you do not have arrangements with your neighbors to bring in your trash can, please swing by the Firehouse to get rid of your garbage on your way home. Help keep our streets clean! Please note: this for household garbage ONLY; it is NOT for trash which should be left on the curb.
o The two cell tower proposals (Ocean Beach Firehouse and Chadwick Marina) that had been submitted to the Toms River Board of Adjustment have been rejected. No new proposals have been submitted.
o Due to the plummeting real estate market, the town-wide property revaluations have been delayed about a year. Current sales comparisons will be used for the new valuations, which are expected to be in effect with next year’s tax bills.
o Several streets in Silver Beach have been earmarked for repaving. However, since American Water is replacing water pipes in parts of the Barrier Island, paving has been postponed to the fall.
o Reminder – There is no parking on any street in Silver Beach. “No Parking” signs will be replaced by Memorial Day weekend.
Summer is just around the corner…CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE BEACH SOON!!
